Notes

This story is an updated version of an idea Russell T Davies originally submitted to the Doctor Who production office way back in the early 1980s.

This story features special guest Simon Pegg - who has been narrating the BBC3 documentary Doctor Who Confidential.

This story also sees the sudden departure of Adam Mitchell who joined The Doctor and Rose Tyler at the end of the previous story "Dalek".

While this is not the first time that a companion has tried to change history (that distinction belongs to Barbara Wright in "The Aztecs"), Adam is the first to try and exploit the future for personal gain. Adam is also the first on-screen companion in Doctor Who history to be evicted from the TARDIS for bad behaviour.

The working title for this story was "The Companion Who Couldn't" - referring to the story arc that led to Adam's swift departure from the TARDIS.

The full name of the monster in this story is 'The Mighty Jagrafess of the Holy Hadrojassic Maxarodenfoe'. This has been shortened to just 'The Jagrafess' or just 'Max'.

It is revealed that this story is set during the 'Fourth Great and Bountiful Human Empire'. The First Earth Empire featured in several Third Doctor stories, including the 1972 story "The Mutants" and the 1973 story "Frontier in Space".

Following the "Bad Wolf" theme begun in earlier stories of this season, one of the broadcast channels featuring the Face of Boe (from "The End of the World") is named "BAD WOLF TV".

Established as the home of a news network, Satellite 5 eventually became a 'studio' for television game shows. By the time The Doctor returned to it 100 years later in "Bad Wolf/The Parting of the Ways", it was producing versions of shows such as Big Brother and The Weakest Link as part of the Daleks's plan to harvest humans.

Like the previous stories the ending contains a trailer for the next story. In this case "Father's Day".

Following on immediately after this story, on BBC3, was the seventh chapter of Doctor Who Confidential "The Dark Side" looking into evil genii and sudden death.

The Plot

Satellite Five
Satellite Five
For his first flight in the TARDIS, The Doctor and Rose Tyler take Adam Mitchell 200,000 years into the future to Satellite Five, an orbital broadcasting space station orbiting the Earth so that they can show him the wonders of the planet at the height of the fourth Earth Empire.

Satellite Five is where the news-gatherers are hard at work filtering news from every city, every country and every planet in the Empire. The Doctor though is curious as to why things aren’t quite as he expected – something it seems has halted mankind’s technology progress by about 90 years. Could the answer lie within Floor 500? The very area that the inhabitants of Satellite Five are so anxious to be promoted to but from where no one ever returns? It’s Paradise, they say. The walls are made of gold. Of course, you shouldn’t believe everything you hear on the news…

Suspecting that mankind is being manipulated The Doctor and Rose illicit the help of news-gather Cathica and so gain access to a lift that will take them to Floor 500. What they find at first immediately answers the question as to why the inhabited part of Satellite Five is so warm. For on Floor 500 it is very cold.

They soon meet The Editor who is curious as to why both The Doctor and Rose are, according to his records, "nobody" as they don't show up on any census reports. Then The Editor becomes aware that The Doctor is a Time Lord and of the function of his TARDIS - all because of Adam.

As well as The Editor The Doctor and Rose get to meet The Editor in Chief who happens to turn out to be the Mighty Jagrafess of the Holy Hadrojassic Maxarodenfoe, a massive alien creature whose current home is above the Editor's control room. The Doctor and Rose soon learn that this alien creature has been guiding Earth along its predetermined path through the manipulation of broadcast media for the last 90 years.

Meanwhile Adam discovers the wonders of travelling in the TARDIS. But does he have what it takes to become the Time Lord's companion especially after Rose allows him to use her mobile phone, that The Doctor has adjusted, to phone home?

But why is The Editor working for the Jagrafess? And why are all the news items that are beamed to the Empire being warped? And why is it so dangerous for Adam to take a visit to the medical centre?

On Satellite Five knowledge can be dangerous and for Adam so can greed for that knowledge.

Quote of the Story

'But you two... don’t exist. Not a trace. No birth, no job, not the slightest kiss. How can you walk through the world without leaving a single footprint?'
