Altered Vistas
- Fan Made Doctor Who Productions
Altered Vistas
Productions are fan endeavours produced for love, not money. The
fans behind this venture are devoted to creating animated amateur
films about Doctor Who and his adversaries.
Altered Vistas
is an amateur production company dedicated to creating Doctor
Who-related features. However, unlike other fan organisations
dedicated to creating additional adventures for the good
Doctor, Altered Vistas is dedicated to adapting and bringing
to life stories that already exist on the fringes of Who-lore.
That covers a broad spectrum of stories, and they are hoping
to adapt for the screen as many of them as they can using
animated CGI, 2D Flash animations, stills taken from
3D models and special effects. All brought to life with specially
recorded soundtracks which include sound effects, purpose-written
incidental and theme music and using the voices of the best
actors that Altered Vistas can find.
Altered Vistas provide a free service for fans in a VCD format
only (which is compatible with most modern DVD players). They
do not release anything in a DVD format as they have no desire
to step on the BBC's toes.
Because they are free all you need to do is send a blank CD
and p&p to a dubsite. They will copy the story for you
and then return the CD to you as a VCD.
A list of stories
released so far can be found below. To read what others think
of these stories and for a list of dubsites please visit the Altered
Vistas Website. |

On 23rd January 1965, the Daleks
made their first appearance in their own full colour comic strip
on the back page of the lavish new children's weekly comic TV
Century 21. Written largely by David Whitaker, who was the series'
original script editor, and illustrated by such legendary comic
strip artists as Richard Jennings, Ron Turner and Eric Eden, this
popular one-page strip ran for 104 instalments.
These strips have
been reprinted many times in Dalek Annuals and other Doctor Who-related
books, plus Doctor Who Weekly, Doctor
Who Monthly and Doctor Who Classic Comics, as well
as being issued complete and in colour as a special edition magazine.
Now, for
the first time, they are brought to life thanks to Altered
Vistas.
Because of the difference between a comic strip and a video
feature, a certain amount of adaptation is inevitable. Altered
Vistas are attempting to make the adaptations as sympathetic to
the source material as possible,
expanding the original story only in the name of atmosphere, deeper
characterisation and the occasional crowd-pleasing reference or
in-joke.
If the strip contradicts information contained in the television
series then that contradiction remains and no attempt has
been made to reconcile the two... Equally, no matter how bad, embarrassing
or unDalek-like a line of dialogue may be, it remains as it featured
in the original strip. Added to this, Altered Vistas have tried,
wherever possible, to base animations and stills on the key frames
from the original strip and
base all designs on the images seen in those panels. The aim is
to bring these strips to life, not change them into something else. |

The Amaryll
Challenge |
| |
|
The Daleks first journey into space
and their first landing on a new world. Unfortunately,
they don't impress the local intelligent plant life
of the planet Alvega quite as they had hoped.
Due to the extensive adaptation required, particularly
on the first strip of this story, this production
comes in at nearly fifty minutes long, by far
the lengthiest of the Chronicles so far.
Because of this, Altered Vistas decided to make it into two episodes
of roughly the same length, with a cliff-hanger
ending to add to the suspense. |

Doctor Who and the Invasion
from Space |
| |
"Doctor Who and the Invasion from Space" was
a World Distributor story published in a single
volume
in
1966. It has often been referred to as the first
Missing Adventure, and sees the First
Doctor accompanied
unwillingly on his travels in TARDIS by the Mortimers,
a peasant family from the time of the Great Fire
of London.
When Altered Vistas suggested to Jonathan Redwood
that it might be fun to record him in character as
the
First Doctor
reading this story, they originally envisaged it
as a bonus feature for another disc. Little did they
realise just how long it would take to read aloud
or what a fine performance he would deliver, and it
quickly became apparent that what Altered Vistas had
was something much more special than a bonus to be
tucked away under
another title.
Altered Vistas expanded their plans for presenting
the story from having the narration accompanied by
the
illustrations from the original book to having the
narration accompanied by CGI images with a few animated
inserts to help bring the whole thing to life as
a sort of moving picture book.
